Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership (THEBP) is a registered charity established in 1991. Its main role is to encourage the private sector to work with schools in Tower Hamlets on a wide range of projects. These are designed to help raise achievement amongst pupils and to provide them with opportunities to improve their work related skills.

Ken McCarthy, Enterprise Manager, explains:
“Our aim is to develop enterprise based activities across the entire curriculum, so, for example, in English, Swanlea students have run a ‘creative language’ project while in PE, students are planning to run a badminton tournament. Activities like these introduce concepts such as organisation, innovation, risk and change. They also help students to acquire skills in areas such as decision making, risk management and presentation. In addition, we will be looking to draw out qualities including adaptability, perseverance, determination and confidence –
all attributes of a true entrepreneur.”
Two of the many projects created by the Education Business Partnership include:

Getting Ahead
GETTING AHEAD is a unique 2-day Work-Related Conference programme operating in Tower Hamlets Secondary Schools. At these conferences, pupils work in groups and are helped by a volunteer from the business community, who acts as a group adviser to encourage and motivate the pupils.

Head to Head
Head to Head is a practice interview programme for pupils in secondary school or college that are about to go on work experience, apply for jobs or gain access to higher education. Volunteers are asked for a half or full day commitment to conduct individual mock interviews with a number of secondary school pupils, giving each pupil constructive feedback after the interview.
