Issue


There is a lot of discussion still to be had with regard to pupils speaking their home language within the school setting i.e. classroom and playtimes. Other children have said that they sometimes feel excluded by being within a minority within the school, especially if they are additionally excluded by language and religion/cultural identity; they frequently refer to being sworn at in Bengali. It has also been an issue raised by staff, normally on the basis that some people feel uncomfortable being in a room with a number of Bangladeshi staff speaking in their own language.

Recommendations

This issue to be discussed within each school in settings where people would be able to feel confident to share their views without any bad feelings. Staff and pupils could contribute anonymous thoughts for discussion.
