Issue

For far too long the issues of race, racism and race equality have not been discussed openly, though local, national and international incidents have regularly kept them in high profile, often through inappropriately lurid tabloid headlines. This has meant that many people have held anxieties over the sensitivity of this area. Consequently they frequently say nothing for fear of offending, or rather speak indirectly to a third party rather than face-to face with the person they should be addressing. For the schools where we have run projects we hope (and we already know of many instances) that the work carried out has opened up the possibilities for clearer dialogue between individuals and groups.

Recommendations

Provide opportunities for pupils and staff to discuss and debate all forms of discrimination and have ownership of the ‘solutions’.
