Aims & Objectives |
|---|---|
|
1. The project aimed to raise achievement, through building confidence, self-esteem and trust within the school community with a specific focus on race equality with year 8 pupils and staff. Current good practice was identified, Theatre in Education work was
carried out with the targeted pupils (Year 8), following focus groups,
and recommendations were made for future actions in regard to pupils,
staff and the wider community. |
|
Key actions taken |
|
• Audit analysis of all school policies/documents was completed, as well as a mapping exercise of current initiatives and activities taking place throughout the school in both the formal and informal curriculum. This recognised current good practice in terms of race equality and equal opportunities, as well as identifying areas requiring further action. • The focus groups were carried out with pupils in Year 8, teaching and non-teaching staff, and also with the Governors. The findings were used to inform both Chinwag (Theatre in Education) and also the school, as to current perceptions. • The project also aimed to develop closer links with the two neighbouring primary schools Thomas Buxton Juniors and St Anne’s RC Primary School. Pupils from each school attended a Theatre in Education session at Swanlea School, then shared their experiences with their peers in their respective schools. • Following consultations with the Head and Deputy Head, school policies and the Staff Handbook are being revised to include race equality. A draft race equality policy is in place, and a working group will be established in September 02 to finalise, monitor and review this. • A programme of staff awareness training has been planned for the coming academic year, involving external consultants.

|
Key issues arising from the project |
|
• The focus groups suggested that there was
some confusion and uncertainty in regard to current race equality legislation
and procedures. The staff awareness raising programme is arranged which
will address these areas of uncertainty, and ensure that a consistent
whole school approach is adopted in regard to opposing racism. • The pupil findings and experiences of racism will inform the PSHE programme, and it is hoped to extend the theatre-in-education sessions to other year groups. Pupils will be tracked to evaluate the impact of the project upon their perceptions and experiences. • Pupil data continues to be analysed by ethnicity to identify pupils who are underachieving. • The school will continue to develop closer links with the wider community, via continued shared learning initiatives with Thomas Buxton Junior and St Anne’s primary schools, through the home-school liaison programme, and also continue to build upon the strong links the school has with the East London Mosque Youth Team.
