Issue

A number of staff during the interviews were either reluctant to give their ethnicity or still raised grave doubts over the relevance and need to ever having to give ethnicity on forms. Additionally, this sometimes spurred some staff on to mention that they had not felt comfortable in revealing their ethnicity/religion/faith within the school. This was particularly so for Jewish staff. Moreover, the issue of being in an interracial relationship and/or being of ‘mixed race’ was still a cause of much consternation, with such people often being the subject of abuse and ridicule.

Recommendations

Discuss the importance of ethnic monitoring and the rationale. Ensure that being of ‘mixed race’ is appreciated and celebrated. Use positive role models for all cultures/religions/faiths.
