Introduction

In response to reports of rising racial tension in some urban areas, the Holocaust Educational Trust has extended its successful Outreach Programme through a pilot inner-city project designed to fit with the new Citizenship Curriculum. We are committed to teaching the history of the Holocaust and by so doing to learn lessons for today about racism, prejudice and discrimination.

Working in secondary schools in Tower Hamlets, we are offering a sustained programme, suitable for students from Year 9 to Year 13, that is adapted to the needs of each institution. We adopt a cross-curricular approach to the topic with a strong emphasis on Citizenship concepts and values. Our staff delivers the programme in conjunction with teachers at your school. All resources are provided by the HET after thorough consultation with your staff.

There is no charge for this service except to cover the travel expenses for a Holocaust survivor to visit your school.

Key principles underpinning this programme

  • Preparatory and follow-up work is essential to support teachers and students in understanding the Holocaust and we provide this support with a sensitive awareness to teacher workload.
  • Survivor testimony is central to our work
  • It is desirable but not essential for students to have some knowledge of the Holocaust
    before embarking on this project.

Evaluation

So far this year we have delivered our programme at Tower Hamlet’s Pupil Referral Unit and George Green’s School with excellent results.

“May I pass on our thanks to you and your team for the work you did before and during the day. Staff and pupils alike were impressed by your enthusiasm and commitment as well as your clear and exciting presentations and workshops…You are welcome in our school any time!”
Mrs Kenny Frederick
Principal
George Green’s School
