Issue

Both staff and pupils will often talk about a feeling of not being listened to fully. Pupils occasionally refer to feeling labelled by some previous incident, maybe from years ago, and not getting a fair hearing during subsequent issues. There is a general feeling that the pressure of time is often the cause of this. Often listening has involved hearing only part of the issue and misinformation and/or rumour then follows, which has and does cause conflict and upset between individuals and groups.

Recommendation

More timetabled opportunities to share and discuss incidents, so that outcomes can be practical and supportive to both the ‘victim’ and the ‘perpetrators’. Boxes to be supplied where staff and pupils can use this anonymity to flag up issues of concern, that can be discussed and ‘resolved’ in debate and discussion, so that there is shared ownership and all individuals/groups feel listened to and understood.
