Issue

In some schools, staff have shown concern over the granting of time-off for Eid. Sometimes it has been over the practical difficulties of selecting the correct day; or whether two days should be chosen as a safe guard. Some feel that the school should automatically have a day off, others feel that they should also be allowed time off for specific days within their own religious faith. There is diversity within these practices, because some schools have a larger number of minority non-Islamic pupils. A further issue to be taken into consideration is the number of staff, teaching and non-teaching who are also practising Muslims. For some schools the provision of a prayer room has been a bone of contention. The practical difficulties of allowing staff and pupils to use a prayer room has been the main problem, while for other people the issue has sometimes revolved around their perception of the needs of people to have a prayer room in a school.

Recommendations

Guidelines which will support schools with the debate and discussion between staff, pupils, parents and governors. Schools can then draw up their own guidelines in light of the current findings. Review and evaluate these guidelines every year.
