Aim(s):
To increase knowledge, awareness and understanding of lifestyles and cultures within the local and school community in order to provide an anti-racist approach, encouraging pupils to become critical thinkers and independent and responsible learners.
Achievements:
The main focus of this project was staff development and involvement with years 3 & 4. The facilitator carried out INSET with teaching and non-teaching staff in order to achieve consistency of understanding and awareness with regard to racism. The staff reported that they had learned a lot from the INSET and commented that they were now more aware of the issues concerning racism with specific reference to attitudes, values and beliefs. The external consultant/facilitator worked with the class teachers of year 3 & 4 on their existing curriculum to identify the existing good practice, as well as any gaps there might be. A number of recommendations have been identified within the school so that the work can be developed further such as the recording, reporting and monitoring of racist incidents.
