Black History Month & Local Democracy Week in Tower Hamlets 13-19 October
Tower Hamlets City Learning Centre, Youth Participation Team, the Town Hall and the Humanities Education Centre have teamed up to produced a great week of events, for schools during the day, and for youth groups and anyone during the evenings. HEC is linking the week with Black History Month through celebrating Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday by working with schools and children to explore rights and democracy and the importance of constitutions. On Tuesday at Tower Hamlets City Learning Centre there will be a training day for Secondary School teachers along with their students (up to 4/5) on Using the Web for Democracy and Active Citizenship, with a video conference with John Biggs at City Hall (click here to download flyer). On Wednesday there wil be the launch of a wall of democracy the Fair Play Wall at the Town Hall as part of a training day from Primary School teachers and their school councillors (up to 3). The Wall will display school council declarations (click to download an example) and constitutions. On Thursday a Tower Hamlets primary school will be researching a Citizenship Ceremony at the Registry Office in Bow. On Friday Tower Hamlets will hold its first ever Secondary School Council Video Conference (download flyer).
