Theme

Road safety: Touhidal Islam is a 21 year old man. On Monday 15 July 1996 his life changed forever. He was hit by a coach while crossing Whitechapel Road. He was then 14 years old and has become paralysed from the shoulders down. He approached individual schools and the borough, Physical Impairment Advisory Teacher, with a plan to deliver to primary schools information about road safety.

Aims and Objectives

  • To encourage discussion from a first hand source, risks in everyday life.
  • To encourage children to raise money for spinal research

Planning

a) Description of process

Touhidal planned the delivery of his talk and produced a lesson plan to follow on research into spinal injuries. Hilary McQuire, Support for Learning Service, went into individual class (approx. 30 mins per class) and discussed Touhidal with the children and prepared the children to develop thinking skills and to be able to ask Touhidal questions after his talk.

Ways Forward

1 To produce a short video for the first bit of his talk

2 quality at individual examples of difference and diversity, as well as developing an understanding of voluntary groups

3 For students to be able to take part in group discussions using listening skills, which demonstrate accurately receiving and understanding the communication of others

4 Healthy schools to support Touhidal with the development of the video and liasing with schools to develop a programme and for Jill Moore, Healthy Schools Advisory Teacher, to prepare the classes before he goes in.

Description of School(s)

Bangabandhu and Ben Johnson are both large primary schools in Tower Hamlets, with a large majority of Bengali families attending them. They are inner-city schools.
