Activity: Plan and make the perfect sandwich

This activity fits well with the Year 5 QCA design activity on making sandwiches. The aim is for children to experiment with different sandwich fillings and then list their favourite three. They can be encouraged to try their own ideas or try new ones

Pupils should be encouraged to plan sandwiches which incorporate key nutrients. A sandwich is the perfect example of a balanced meal. It is based on bread, which provides the cereal content. Add plenty of salad for vegetable content and a little cheese, fish or meat to provide protein. Bread and cheese also contain calcium. Cress, bread, fish and eggs have iron, and the absorption of iron can be aided by vitamin C found in tomatoes and peppers.

Possible healthy sandwich combinations:

Peanut butter & banana
Cheese & grated carrot/coleslaw
Egg mayonnaise, watercress & tomato
Cottage cheese & apple
Marmite, cucumber & lettuce
Tuna, sweetcorn & sliced red pepper

Activity: What a lot of rubbish

Each house in London throws away an average of 1,000kg of rubbish every year.
Most of the waste we create is buried and pollutes the earth.
This rubbish will fall into the following categories:

  • Paper and card
  • Vegetable waste
  • Glass
  • Metals
  • Plastics
  • Cloth
  • Other

Next to each kind of rubbish write or draw one thing you or your family have thrown away in the last week.

  • Underline in red waste that is biodegradable.
  • Underline in blue the waste that can be recycled

Do you or your family do anything to reduce what you throw away? What can you do? Write your ideas for reducing your rubbish.
