The Education and Inspections Act 2006 introduced a duty on all maintained schools in England to promote community cohesion and on Ofsted, to report on the contributions made in this area. The duty on schools came into effect on 1 September 2007 and the duty on Ofsted commenced in September 2008. Community cohesion is promoted through the key concept in the Citizenship curriculum, 1.3 ‘Identity and Diversity: living together in the UK’ and is also one of the seven cross curriculum dimensions, 'Identity and Cultural Diversity’.
