Developed over last two years, the PAL programme decribed in these pages should not be seen as being complete but rather as work in progress.

The three elements of Citizenship, Careers Education and Personal, Social and Health Education are interdependent and complementary. Linking the components together allows young people to make sense of their experience as a responsible member of society, aware of their own development and acquiring the skills to gain employment. Taken together these three elements represent entitlement for pupils for a curriculum for Preparation for Adult Life and assists schools to deliver the second aim of the National Curriculum:

To promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepare all pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

Preparation for Adult Life (PAL) framework

This coherent framework incorporates the statement of values of Curriculum 2000 and promotes an inclusive, whole school approach to raising achievement. It provides a structured focus to support access to the curriculum, attainment, and opportunities for progression, self-awareness, responsibility and independent learning.

The Preparation for Adult Life (PAL) framework informs and is informed by other school policies: Inclusive, Equal Opportunities, Behaviour, Anti-Racist and Anti-Bullying. It also meets the statutory and non-statutory programmes of work for Citizenship, PSHE and Careers Education at the appropriate key stages.
